Shovel It Mutations and Weather

How sky conditions, vehicles, and relics change snow and item value.

Mutations and Weather

Mutations are the reason two identical digs in Shovel It! can pay wildly different amounts. Weather paints the map, relics bias the dice, vehicles can pollute tiles on purpose, and night Starfall opens a premium window for rare rolls. This guide explains the major mutation names players chase—Wet, Frozen, Graced, Raged, Bloodlit, Polluted, and Toxic—and how Rain, Thunder, and Starfall nights interact with them.

Pair this page with the Relics Tier List when you spend spins, the Starfall Event Guide when you plan night sessions, and the Toxic Update notes when patch-specific Toxic content or codes are live.

Why mutations matter

Shovel It advertises huge item variation. Mutations are special modifiers on snow and on the items underneath. A mutated find is typically rarer and more valuable than a plain drop from the same tile. Weather is the most visible lever: when the sky changes, the kinds of mutations you should expect also change. Relics then push percentages—some boost Wet or Frozen odds, others raise Graced, Raged, Bloodlit, or general random mutation chance.

If you only dig on clear days with no relic plan, you still progress, but you leave multiplier value on the table. Smart players watch the sky, move drills, and equip relics that match the active forecast.

Mutation roster

Exact multipliers can shift with balance patches, so treat the list below as a playbook of identities rather than a frozen spreadsheet. Always re-check in-game tooltips after major updates.

Wet

Wet is the classic rain-linked mutation. When Rain is up, prioritize digs and drills on productive tiles and lean on relics that mention Wet chance or weather boosts. Broken Relic lines such as Wet-oriented rolls exist specifically to raise how often this modifier appears. Wet is often your first “I get it now” mutation because Rain is frequent and easy to recognize.

Frozen

Frozen pairs with cold presentation and ice-focused play. Cold-oriented Broken Relics and ice snow farms support this lane. If you are already grinding ice for chase legendaries such as Thor’s Hammer, Frozen awareness doubles the value of that time—you are not only hunting a shovel, you are hunting mutated ice finds.

Graced

Graced is a high-impact mutation associated with strong relic synergy. Lost Relic Angelic-style rolls call out Graced mutation chance with a large multiplier identity in community relic breakdowns. When you own Graced-friendly relics, treat any weather window that already boosts quality digs as a Graced farm, not a casual clear.

Raged

Raged sits on the aggressive side of the mutation spectrum and is called out on Demonic-style Lost Relic text in public relic lists. If your build stacks Raged chance, keep digging through stormy or high-intensity weather instead of logging off early. Raged and Graced are both reasons to care about Lost Relic quality once you reach the late economy.

Bloodlit

Bloodlit is the night-flavored mutation players associate with darker multipliers. Vampiric-style relic lines reference Bloodlit chance and night multipliers. During night—and especially when Starfall overlaps—Bloodlit becomes a primary reason to stay online with luck blessings active.

Polluted

Polluted is tightly linked to vehicles. Community guides note that vehicles do more than move you: they can pollute snow, creating mutation opportunities manual digging alone may miss. When you specifically want Polluted, hop in a vehicle, cover wide patches, and dig the altered snow. This is one of the cleanest “play the system” loops in Shovel It.

Toxic

Toxic arrives with the Toxic Update era content and weather. When Toxic conditions or related rewards are live, pivot drills and active digs toward that window and watch the Toxic Update page for codes and patch context. Toxic is a reminder that the mutation list is living—new weather can introduce new premium modifiers.

Weather systems

Rain

Rain is your reliable Wet engine and a general signal to dig harder. Elemental-style Broken Relics that boost Rain and Thunder weather value make rainy sessions disproportionately strong. Move drills into dense sidewalk or road snow when Rain starts if those tiles match your coin goals, or into quest-specific snow if you can multitask.

Thunder

Thunder is the storm sibling to Rain—less casual, more “stay and farm.” Weather-boost relics that mention Thunder belong equipped before the storm resolves. Thunder sessions are excellent times to burn temporary luck or power codes because each dig has a better shot at mutated outcomes.

Starfall (night)

Starfall is called out in the official game description for a reason: do not miss it at night. Stars signal a premium event window for rare mutations and skins. Preparation matters more than panic clicking—see the dedicated Starfall Event guide for luck stacking, relic loadouts, and drill placement. From a mutations perspective, Starfall is when Bloodlit-oriented and general rare-mutation builds shine.

Relic synergy without the spreadsheet headache

Broken Relics (community pricing around the ~500K tier) include tools such as Wet and Cold (Frozen support), Elemental weather boosts, Infested random mutation chance, Extended radius, Speedy movement digs, and more. Lost Relics (around the ~500M tier) add sharper toys: Angelic Graced lean, Demonic Raged lean, Vampiric Bloodlit and night lean, Leprechaun luck, Giant radius, Mutated random chance, Money Maker coins, and ultra-rare Mythical or Hybrid outcomes.

Build around one or two mutation stories instead of equipping contradictory relics. Examples:

  • Rain farmer: Elemental + Wet-leaning Broken Relics, drills on wet-friendly tiles
  • Night hunter: Vampiric + luck blessings, Starfall login plan
  • Chaos roller: Infested or Mutated chance relics plus vehicle pollution routes
  • Ice specialist: Cold/Frozen support while hunting ice legendaries

Always cross-check live rankings on the Relics Tier List before expensive rerolls.

Practical farming loop

  1. Glance at the sky and note Rain, Thunder, clear day, or night Starfall.
  2. Equip relics that match that weather’s mutation story.
  3. Reposition drills.
  4. If hunting Polluted, add a vehicle route across fresh snow.
  5. Dig the snow type your quests need so progression and mutation farming happen together.
  6. Sell non-quest loot while the mutated inventory is still fresh in mind—know which finds were premium.

Common mistakes

Ignoring weather entirely. Digging ice with no Frozen or luck plan. Buying vehicles only for cosmetics and never using pollution. Spending Lost Relic spins without reading Graced, Raged, or Bloodlit synergy. Leaving drills on dead tiles when a storm starts. Assuming Toxic rules never change—patch pages exist for a reason.

Where to go next

For night-only tactics, open Starfall Event. For economy and shovel context that funds relic spins, return to Getting Started and How to Play. For quest snow requirements that overlap your farms, use Quests. Mutations reward attention: watch the sky, drive when you need pollution, and let relics turn ordinary snow into premium loot.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What causes mutations in Shovel It?

Weather, relics, vehicle pollution, and general random chance. Rain and Thunder push weather mutations; night Starfall raises rare-roll potential; relics bias specific modifiers.

How do I get Polluted snow?

Use vehicles while clearing snow. Vehicles can pollute tiles, creating Polluted mutation opportunities beyond normal manual digs.

Which relics help Wet or Frozen?

Broken Relic lines include Wet and Cold styles that raise those mutation chances, plus Elemental relics that boost Rain and Thunder weather value.

Is Toxic tied to a specific update?

Yes. Track Toxic weather and related rewards on the Toxic Update page, and farm actively while that condition is available.

Should I save Starfall for a separate guide?

Use this page for mutation identity and weather basics, then read the Starfall Event guide for night prep, drill setups, and rare skin hunting.
